Secara materi, mobil balap itu tidak sebanding nilainya dengan puluhan mobil yang dipamerkan selama 10 hari sejak jumat (22/7). Rencananya, mobil formula itu mewakili indonesia pada 9th Student Formula Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan 2011 di Sirkuit Shizouka Jepang, 5-9 September 2011. Lawan yang akan dihadapi adalah mobil inovatif dari 86 Universitas ternama dari berbagai negara, seperti China, India, Jepang, Korea Selatan, Pakistan, dan Thailand.

Pembuatan mobil Bimasakti dilakukan sejak Januari 2011, menggunakan mesin Suzuki Thunder 250 cc bantuan Ikatan Ahli Teknologi Otomotif (IATO). Dengan kapasitas mesin itu, mobil dapat meluncur dengan kecepatan 140-160 kilometer/jam. Biaya yang dikeluarkan untuk merakitnya mencapai Rp 140 Juta. Presiden IATO, Gundai Shinduwinata menambahkan, Bimasakti menjadi mobil perdana indonesia yang berlaga di ajang Kompetisi Formula Pelajar di Jepang. Rabu (20/7) mobil itu diluncurkan oleh Rektor UGM Sudjawardi di Gedung Pusat Kebudayaan Koesnadi Hardjasoemantri, Kampus Bulaksumur, Yogyakarta.

Setelah diluncurkan, mobil langsung dua kali mengelilingi Boulevard UGM. Sayang, sempat terjadi insiden karena mobil tergelincir dan menabrak portal. "Akibat insiden itu, memang ada kerusakan tetapi tidak mempengaruhi performa kendaraan. Hanya bagian depannya yang rusak,"kata Koordinator Dosen Pembimbing Tim Bimasakti, Fauzun. Sang Pengemudi, Muhammad Audi Yusuf mengatakan ada performa dan tarikan Bimasakti sesuai target namun ada kekurangan di sistem steering.
